Ed001: I agree with all your points regarding the Japanese Grand Prix.
I like to add one more point :
Ferrari, trying to get that single point for the fastest race lap while Leclerc was around 25 seconds ahead of Ricardo, pitted him and brought the gap to 5 seconds or something. And once the race was over they were left with 15 second penalty (which demoted him to 7th) and no fastest lap. So, I think Ferrari and Leclerc lost 2 points while trying to get 1. May be they should sent him after Sainz without going to pit stop. May be I'm being hard hung on them, as they wouldn't have known that they would be punished with 15 second penalty.

{Ed001's Note - I think they had the choice of either sitting tight and struggling on tyres or making a stop and going for the extra point while being safe on tyres. I am pretty sure they said his tyres were going.}

Ed001, What do you think about the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix? Last year, both Mercedes and Red bull dominated Ferrari. Do you think there would be any reversal in fortune for Ferrari?

{Ed001's Note - Ferrari look to be ahead of the rest now, but they still struggle in outright race pace. I can see it being a Ferrari front row and then the two scarlet cars spending the race being hounded by Mercs and Red Bull. I wouldn't be surprised to see McLaren hang on to their coat-tails either. With it being Honda's home circuit, it is likely they will have been burning the midnight oil to get their engine to its peak, so we might even get Toro Rosso on the back of it too. The only problem will be if anyone gets past the Ferraris, then they won't be able to conserve tyres and have to push to chase, which means the pace will be too hot for McLaren and Toro Rosso then.}

@Ed001: Do you think Ferrari sided with Leclerc and change their strategy to get him P1 after the Pit stop.
Ironically, that Vettel's MCU-K failure affected Leclerc Race too.

{Ed001's Note - yeah I am certain they did, Vettel was even telling them over the radio his rears were gone to try and get them to box him and they kept just fobbing him off.}

I meant to put it up to get the review of the day auto links as I wasn't able to do a review of the day on Monday night, but missed the time cut off and so it never autolinked. My error, I was recording a Liverpool podcast and just never noticed the time, as we had a bunch of technical glitches. Took us 6 hours to record the pod in the end. Nothing went right!}

@Ed001: Sorry, you faced issue after issue. Thanks for the points :)

{Ed001's Note - no worries it happens. It wouldn't have been so bad but we had to delay starting by 4 hours just to begin with, so I ended up finishing at gone 6am here. I was very ready to sleep at that point.

By the way, I have to take back what I said about Leclerc whining now, as I have heard his interview since and I understand his unhappiness. He was told to keep slowing the pack when Vettel went in and changed tyres and not told Vettel had done so. Vettel came out pushed like mad, while he was still being told to take it easy and that is why he lost the lead. Suddenly I can see why he is angry with the team.}

Do you expect Ferrari to continue the form in Russia?

{Ed001's Note - yes. This is their true pace finally being achieved. They had the faster car but made errors initially in their upgrades and set up, which left them struggling to get speed out of the car. Now they have figured out where they went wrong and once more have the fastest car. The only issue they have left to sort out is tyre wear, as they do wear through their tyres much faster than the Mercs, so they are unable to push as hard in the race.}

RB tasted their own Strategy Medicine in Hungary. Hammer put a blinder of Last few laps while catching up Verstappen. Spa and Monza will give a clear picture of Honda engine's power in that RBs and whether the one trick pony Ferrari are real beasts in straight line. I am actually puzzled why gasly is under performing in the RB while Max is beating out even the Mercs!

{Ed001's Note - Honda have worked more on driveability I think, which is why it is so much better. Ferrari will do fine on Spa as their set up is about fast corners and straights. RB and Mercs might struggle as they are high downforce cars.}

Mercs will be ok I think in Spa. Mercs engine is as good as Ferrari in the straights. RB may struggle. Unless Ferrari bungle the strategy in race and decisions in Quali they can be favs to win in Spa. Expecting Kimi to do well also.

Top 10 Formula 1 Drivers

It was really difficult to pick just ten, especially as some I am just relying on stories and old footage to judge them by. But these are my 10 anyway:

10. Sebastian Vettel

Despite losing his way when under pressure and not being anything like as good as he was in the last few years, winning that many world titles means you have to squeeze him in to any top 10. I am not sure he fully deserves it, but you simply cannot ignore the titles.

9. Nelson Piquet

Yes he was a good driver, but he made the list because I have a soft spot for him as, when I was a very young child we were settling down to watch a race on TV and my mother asked me who I thought would win. I said Lauda. My mother, being very mature, repeated the question at a higher volume, so I again replied Lauda. This continued for a long time, with her bellowing the question at me until I finally admitted defeat and said Piquet, as it was the only other driver I could think of. He won that race and I used to support him after that. He gets in the list because he shut my mother up and that is a miracle of epic proportions, worthy of inclusion in any list.

8. Stirling Moss

When I was a child, someone gave me a book of adventure stories for boys or something similar one Christmas and it included the story of his Mille Miglia triumph or something. While not F1, it piqued my interest in him and I have since read of him winning one race purely by fooling everyone into thinking he would stop for tyres and not doing so and having to drive on the grass at the side of the road, when the tyres were shredded in the final laps, to cool the wheels down enough to finish the race and win.

7. Jim Clark

So many racing drivers call him the best ever that he has to be included. Having never seen him drive myself, I have to put him fairly low down, even if he might well deserve to be higher up.

6. Alain Prost

His philosophy of going as slow as possible while still winning is not exactly appealing, but anyone who can give Senna a race every single weekend deserves inclusion.

5. Niki Lauda

The only man who could develop a car like Schumacher, he was not just fast but also knew what to do to make the car better. His feedback and hard work was key to his success. Added to that the bravery to return to racing, in the days when drivers died regularly, just weeks after having had the last rites read to him following a crash and fire, deserves the utmost respect.

4. Lewis Hamilton

Blisteringly fast, arguably the fastest driver of all time, it is almost certain that he will move up the list before his career ends. For someone to come from nothing, unlike most drivers he did not come from wealth, his dad had to do 2 and sometimes 3 jobs to pay for his early career, and achieve what he has in a sport that revolves around money is incredible.

3. Michael Schumacher

He was just a machine, he could be driving through a difficult twisty bit of road and still have the spare capacity to make tyre calls or suggest changes needed to make the car faster. The race when he finished second despite the car being stuck in 5th gear, even managing to make a pit stop, was possibly the greatest drive I have ever seen. He was fast from the moment he stepped into an F1 car, his teammate for that one race with Jordan in Belgium says it was a bad weekend for him because he was just totally blown away by this new kid in his first ever race at the track. Schumacher had told Eddie Jordan he had driven Spa before, but it was a lie to get the drive while Gachot was in court, but no one would ever have known from the way he drove that car in qualifying.

2. Ayrton Senna

These top 4 could easily be in any order, but Senna just misses the top spot despite his incredible driving. It is little wonder Hamilton grew up idolising Senna, the man was a genius who drove the wheels off whatever car he was given. A proper racer, who just wanted to go as fast as possible.

1. Juan Manuel Fangio

From the era of Moss, when the cars had to be driven beyond their limits at all times and he was head and shoulders above anyone else of his time, even a driver as good as Moss. There were no aero packages to aid him. Gear changes took a skill all of their own and he was the best of his generation. It is difficult to see how anyone can compare from later eras when the cars have evolved to become easier to drive and more about the speed of the car than the skill of the driver.

So I've watched a lot of Races that Senna was in, and to be honest with you I thought he was a very dangerous driver.
His heroics in Brazil aside, I don't think he was as good as people say, he was very dangerous at times especially concerning Alain Prost.

{Ed001's Note - you seem to have forgotten Prost rammed him first to win the title mate. It was not all one-sided.}

Hello Ed what's your opinion on the size of modern day f1 cars? Surely they're too big for overtaking on tight tracks which is making qualifying more exciting than the race? Do you have any other suggestions as how to make f1 more exciting?

{Ed001's Note - I have been saying that for ages, smaller cars would make a huge difference.

For me I would get rid of radio, the only thing they should be able to do is let someone know when the car needs to be stopped for safety reasons, let the drivers drive at the speed they think fit and they would hopefully race, rather than drive to a delta. Get rid of all the telemetry etc that they can look at live and the live timings too. Drivers should be driving as fast as they can get the car to go round the track, not following laid out plans and nursing tyres.

There are many things that would make for better racing, such as manual gearboxes and weaker brakes, that would ruin the ideal of F1 being high tech cars. But that would not be necessary if a driver is driving by the seat of his pants.

Oh and most importantly dump the blue flags and stop making backmarkers get out of the way. Just let everyone race and the races will be more exciting.}

Thanks for the reply Ed, what about penalties Ed? I felt that the penalty yesterday was harsh although it is the rules I feel racing is racing and if Hamilton has to break a bit so be it surely that’s just the name of the game?

Well Ed. the penalty decision certainly made the ending brilliant TV. you have to love a Vettel spat.

I can totally understand why people argue it is a harsh penalty and he could do nothing else, however, you have to - like the stewards do - consider from the other drivers perspective, he made a mistake and cut a corner and effectively intentionally or unintentionally blocked the other driver who would of otherwise certainly been passed. Whether he could "do nothing" is irrelevant in my book as he made the fundamental error in the first place and by blocking kept his place, that's what's penalised.

Yes it tainted the afternoon but it's all come from a vettel mistake. Again!

It was however very good TV!

{Ed001's Note - I didn't think it was that harsh, it was the mildest penalty they have for the offence and the stewards would have known by the telemetry whether Vettel had tried to avoid doing that or not. Clearly they felt he made no attempt to avoid the block and gave him the penalty that gave him a chance to make a race of it.}

Yeh I’d agree with that.

I thought Vettel’s comments about those sort of decisions drive fans away was misplaced - actually controversy makes for great entertainment and media hysteria, if anything the race was boring without it.

I was shocked at the headlines myself with many outlet claiming the the penalty ruined the race when it, in my opinion, shook things up in a race that wasn't exactly hitting the height it had potential to hit. I think he embarrassed himself, Vettel. But what is even more embarrassing in my opinion is Ferrari, who had forgotten to tell Leclerc of Vettel's penalty, deciding to appeal the call. They're looking overly desperate in response to a shocking start to the season which of because is of their own doing. Their pace though. It made me anticipate big action.
I dropped my head in dispair for Norris but the race in the main could have done better with a little more action to me. Really appreciate this piece Ed. Cheers!

{Ed001's Note - cheers Ugbe. Also Ferrari have forgotten they benefitted from an almost exact same call last season against Verstappen. }

A story that would have likely amused Niki, as he was never really a fan of James:

My Uncle used to work for James Hunt as a mechanic, he invited my mother along to an end of season party that he was at. While at the party, a man put his arm around my mother and said "And who is this lovely young lady? " My mother, being the classy lady that she is, told him to F off, which really, really shocked my uncle, who then said "You do realise that was James Hunt?! "

Nice article Ed.

There was a piece on BBC I think from an anonymous engineer stating Ferrari had gone the wrong route with their front wing and aero package and it was potentially a dead end in terms of development.

Unfortunate that it appears true and a big team like Ferrari can get it so wrong and effectively ruin the season in terms of teams fighting for tittle.

I would of liked to of seen LEC v HAM title battle

Maybe next year!

You are probably right Ed, what a shame as LEC is clearly talented.

What I think is good to see is McLaren seemingly showing signs of recovery with Norris showing well, bar the mistake at the weekend, but he is a rookie so you can let him off perhaps.

You have to wonder why Russell was placed in Williams though? Seems rather pointless and potentially career damaging.

{Ed001's Note - I am glad to see McLaren doing well. I like the look of their cars. Norris is doing well as Sainz is a decent driver and he is comparing well with him.

Williams really need to bite the bullet and hand over from Clare Williams. She just doesn't seem to have it. I don't know why as she seems highly intelligent and must know the industry from all the years growing up in it. Some people just aren't suited though.}
