That comment might read a bit pointless, but basically I think that for this year at least Renault will hold an advantage over the Renault still, meaning McLaren can finish as probably the fourth or fifth best team (assuming Haas should only move backwards at this point (low devo) and Renault don't overtake them just yet). Although I do agree, what do McLaren do next year when they're behind Merc, Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault? Red Bull might be showing that the Honda is on a level playing field and they will have lost the £100 million or so that Honda were providing a year?

Nice roundup Ed001, great to have a good race to calm everyone down after the predictably drab Australian GP. Such a shame that RB had a 'mare as there could have been even more intrigue, paddock gossip was that they had the fastest race car (although this might have forced it into a more typical 2 stop race, and they could have just walked away with it. ).

Regarding your point about McLaren; Honda and TR, I do also think it was a mistake in the long run. But, it's probably still too early too call. Yes, Gasley did finish fourth, but how much of it was down to his talent? By all accounts Hartley is not a terrible driver and he could only finish 13th (before penalty). Alonso and Vandoorne finished 7th and 8th, indicating this was perhaps their level. I think the McLaren is undoubtedly faster than the Toro Rosso, James Key is pretty good and their chassis last year was one of the best (although a lack of development meant they gradually slid backwards), presumably with a bit of Honda money their chassis should be pretty solid right now too.

Honda are still only targeting reliability at this point, and are not even at the performance level of last year's Renault which was quite a way off Merc and Ferrari. Renault are still trying to push performance forward which is more attractive to McLaren at this point.

{Ed001's Note - I believe Hartley did not have the updated engine which is why his performance was so far adrift.}
